Basketball Names 2008-2009 Team Captains
Cunningham, Doherty and Vander Baan to lead the
Crusaders in 2008-2009
WORCESTER,
Mass. - Senior forward Colin Cunningham (Memphis, Tenn.),
senior guard Pat Doherty (Scranton, Pa.) and senior
forward Alex Vander Baan (Uxbridge, Mass.) will serve as
the tri-captains of the 2008-2009 Holy Cross men's
basketball team, it was announced by head coach Ralph
Willard.
Cunningham returns as the starting small forward for Holy
Cross, after averaging 8.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.2
assists per game last season, while hitting 36.8 percent
(28 of 76) of his three-point attempts. He scored in
double-figures 13 times in 2007-2008, including a
career-high 20 points against American in the Patriot
League Tournament. Over the course of his Holy Cross
career, Cunningham has totaled 403 points, 240 rebounds,
108 assists and 55 steals. He has also made 36.6 percent
(53 of 145) of his career three-point field goal attempts.
Doherty will be in his second season as the Crusaders'
starting point guard, after averaging 7.4 points, 4.3
assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game last year,
and hitting 79.1 percent (72 of 91) of his free throw
attempts. He led the team in assists 17 times and in
steals 13 times last season, in addition to scoring in
double figures on seven occasions. The 2004-2005 Patriot
League Rookie of the Year, Doherty has now totaled 489
points, 248 assists, 168 rebounds and 109 steals over the
course of his career as a Crusader.
Vander Baan is entering his fourth year as the starting
power forward for Holy Cross, and averaged 8.5 points and
a team-best 5.7 rebounds per game last season. He led the
team in rebounds eight times in 19 games played in
2007-2008, including a career-high 15 rebounds against
Hofstra. Over the course of his career as a Crusader,
Vander Baan has now totaled 576 points, 446 rebounds, 123
assists, 64 steals and 27 blocked shots, while playing in
85 games with 78 starts.
The Crusaders return three starters and 10 letterwinners
from their 2007-2008 squad which went 15-14 overall.
